Artists Karen Heyne and Paul Bogut regularly visit Betsy Fisher and their DC customers, bringing and displaying the hand-screened tops and dresses that add a unique twist to office and street looks. A customer once commented that a Heyne Bogut trunk show turns the store into a gallery: a tempting, interactive version, thanks to their new collection of home furnishings in signature fabrics and prints, and playful spring and summer clothing to try.
For inspiration, Karen and Paul pay attention to “what’s happening to people economically, culturally – and try to respond with product that fills a need.” Their appreciation for street art and new indie music connects them to “how people are feeling emotionally – especially younger people.” This awareness of how people create meaningful style leads to greater functionality, so that a hand-painted silk dress goes to a party at night, but pairs as comfortably with leggings or sandals for day wear.
Karen’s and Paul’s clear vision of their work and contribution rings true for many of us: “As always, our main interest is in creating intimacy and reminding people of the value in their lives in wearing and supporting locally produced, limited edition products. We think it is important for us as Americans to pass on our craft heritage and maintain our abilities to create something with our hands.” From their hands, to our closets!
Thanks, Karen and Paul, for sharing thoughts March 1, 2010, as well as coming to DC this weekend.
